Raise your hands if you ever bought a piece of jewellery without knowing the origins of its metal. I think all of us can admit to that. We didn’t know that buying metal from an unknown source allowed bad practice to be hidden from view.
...
Unfortunately, for many years, people have been working hard and not getting paid fairly for it. Some of them were not getting paid at all, if you all remember your History classes. On top of that, the consumers had little idea of what was going on behind closed doors. It never crossed our minds that the miner that was working in a dangerous environment for about 15 hours a day with the chance of being buried alive, having respiratory problems or getting mercury poisoning, was getting paid close to nothing for it.
Luckily, access to information is now a reality and, with the introduction of Fairtrade in the UK back in 2011, people can finally know that the metal in their jewellery comes from a good place, and the hard-working miners – who toil to produce the gold and silver in our jewellery – and their families can earn fair wages and work their way out of poverty.
...
This is exactly why movements like the Fairtrade Fortnight are so important to so many people. It is in our very nature to want to help one another. If only people knew the impact Fairtrade has on other people’s lives, they would definitely pay more attention to it. By raising awareness of Fairtrade, we are increasing the number of supporters, which also help small-scale miners reach the international market without the need of middle men.

...
Companies like CRED Jewellery – one of the pioneers of Fairtrade gold – also have a key role in all of this. After all, the miners will still be left with nothing if no one manages to sell their gold and silver. By creating and promoting beautiful jewellery, we are supporting hundreds of families and helping improve their communities.

At the end of the day, the simple act of choosing where to buy your ring from can have a major impact on someone else’s life. The fact that more people are now standing up against injustice could be the beginning of a world where every trade is fair.
