At Cred we want to help you find a ring you’ll love forever. Whether you are browsing for yourself or are looking for tips to help select a ring for your partner, here is our guide to getting it right.
How much to spend on an engagement ring is something we are often asked. It is not a question of etiquette, spending 1, 2- or 3-months’ salary is up to you! Do some research and set a budget, but always be comfortable with the amount you decide to spend.
TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR MONEY GO FURTHER
When it comes to buying diamonds, it is important to note that a 2-carat diamond is not double the price of a 1 carat diamond, as a much rarer stone the cost is more like 4 times higher!
If you do have your heart set on a substantial sized rock, consider a cluster or halo instead of one large gemstone, these can give a similar appearance but at a lower price point. Or choose a coloured centre stone instead of a diamond. We have many coloured stone engagement rings which also feature diamonds, providing sparkle, style and interest, while making your budget go further.
Lab Grown Diamonds are more competitively priced than mined diamonds, as well as being socially and environmentally responsible. This way your budget will buy you a bigger or a better-quality diamond, depending on your priorities.
Ask a jeweller for recommendations, they can advise on different stone choices and other ways of adapting designs to give the look you want for less.
CHOOSING THE RING FOR YOUR PARTNER
Make sure it’s her taste not yours! Look at jewellery she already wears, what is her style and preferred metal colours, choose a style with a complimentary feel. Has she dropped any hints? check out her social media, she may have a Pinterest board, or ask a trusted friend or a relative of hers to shop with you.
FIND A JEWELLER YOU TRUST
There are many reasons for doing this. If you want something more unusual speak to a jeweller before choosing gems such as Pearl and Opal-you want to love your ring but you also want something that will last the test of time. A professional can help you to consider the practical issues like how hard wearing a stone is. Any gem can be worn in an engagement ring but these are softer stones, and you need to make an informed choice.
Choose a single jeweller to source your ring mount and gemstones from, they will be responsible for the whole ring and will be your point of contact for resizes, maintenance and repairs. Our rings come with a lifetime guarantee. For more information take a look here.
Make sure your ring has a Hallmark. All jewellery sold in the UK is required by law to be hallmarked. This acts like a receipt guaranteeing that your ring is made of the precious metal you chose and at the correct purity levels of 9 or 18ct. Our gold rings come with an additional stamp in the Hallmark which identity them as Fairtrade Gold.
Not all diamonds come with a diamond grading report but this is another type of consumer guarantee. It details all of the characteristics of your diamond and comes from an independent diamond grading laboratory.
All of our diamonds over 0.30cts have a diamond certificate and our Canadian and Lab Grown Diamond certs also give details of their unique identification numbers.
An engagement ring is the subject of much thought and care. Invested with financial and emotional value, it is a symbol of your love, commitment and your relationship. Make sure that your choice of ring lives up to your values too. Ask about Fairtrade Gold and responsibly sourced gems.
